DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES

Prime, 8.30pm

When the show first went to air in Australia, each of the housewives had something about her character than made her appealing. Women recognised something of themselves, their family or their friends in Susan, Bree, Gabrielle, Lynette and Edie.

The marketing of the program capitalised on this and there were T-shirts with "I'm a Bree" or alternative character emblazoned on the front. Now the novelty has worn off and Susan, by my reckoning, has emerged as the most irritating woman in Wisteria Lane.

Bree, Gabrielle, Lynette and even Edie have developed in new directions. Yet Susan has remained the same scattered creative spark who cannot learn from her lessons in life and love. Tonight, Susan realises that Edie was responsible for her house burning down. There will be more stammered conversations and manic hand gestures from Susan.

ENOUGH ROPE

ABC, 9.35pmBritish comedian Ben Elton and Aussie rocker Chrissie Amphlett (pictured) will take turns tonight in the hot seat to face Andrew Denton's benign inquisition.

Denton has an uncanny knack of bringing out the humanity behind the facade of celebrity. His line of questioning follows the theme: life is tough, so how are you getting through it?

Last year Amphlett released her autobiography Pleasure and Pain which detailed her wild ride with the Divynls: the partying, drinking, mismanagement and debt. Today, Amphlett finds peace in sobriety.

Ben Elton has some interesting insights into pop culture. Why do we confuse fame (as in Big Brother) with actual achievement?
